Motion picture set decorator/designer on many films of the 1930s through the 1960s. He received an Oscar nomination in 1944 for Best Art Direction (Black-and-White) for the film "Since You Went Away". He won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction (Color) for "West Side Story" in 1961. Other film credits include "The Searchers", "I Want to Live!", "The Alamo" and "Sergeants 3". Brother of screenwriter Paul Gangelin.
