Cora's maternal and paternal grandparents came to Texas when it was a republic. Her mother, Eleanor "Ella" Ann Derrick, was said to be the first white girl born on Galveston Island. Her father was John Fletcher Talbot. Cora was born near Liverpool in Brazoria County. Cora and her husband moved to Dallas from Galveston.

Cora was a music teacher for many years and was active in music circles and several lineage societies, such as the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She was a member of First Baptist Church.
