On July 18, 1694 when Mercy was 20 years of age, about 250 Abenaki Indians led by the French attacked several Oyster River settlements. Approximately 100 settlers were captured or killed. Mercy's parents and several of her siblings died in the Abenaki/French raid while she was taken captive to Canada. Frenchman Charles Antoine Plagnol adopted her and she was baptized a Catholic in Montreal on April 6, 1697. Her new given name became Marie Ursule.
Orphaned, Mercy never returned to New Hampshire. She married Charles Brisebois on August 3, 1704 in Yamaska, Quebec. They were the parents of Catherine, Marie Ursule, Marguerite Josephe, Francoise Appoline, Marie Francoise, Francois Regis, and Joseph Marie.
