As an Army brat, she was always on the move, attending twelve schools in twelve years. She graduated from Lowell High School in San Francisco, and attended the University of California.

A very giving person, she served as a literacy tutor, and an early Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica.

Following retirement from the San Francisco Department of Social Services, she served nearly twenty years as a docent at the San Francisco Zoo, being especially involved in the raptor program.
