Mariah Clements was born in Brownwood, Brown County, Texas. b.12 August 1880. Mariah's mother was Caroline Clements a former slave/then servant of John Darby Windham of Callahan, Texas.

Census information from the 1840, 1850 and 1860 slave schedules does not give the names of slaves, however, family history information confirms that John Darby Windham purchased the salve Carolyn/Caroline sometime around 183?/1840 prior to migrating, or as he migrated to Texas from Mississippi.

With family information and the age/sex/color information from the 1850 and 1860 census slave schedules relating to John Darby Windham, the slave Caroline Clements appears to be age 10 yrs in 1850 and age 21 in 1860. Mariah's oldest brother, John W. Clements was born in 1859, Nacogdoches, TX. Caroline would have been aproximately 18 to 19 years of age and within her child bearing age.

The 1870 United States Federal Census documents Caroline Clements (error/Clemmons) and three (3) of her children, John W. Clements, Donee Clements and Frank Clements residing in dwellings next to John Darby Windham in Callahan, Brown County, Texas. The ages appear to be under stated, but this data would not be uncommon as slave birth data was not kept as exacting as that of non-slaves or free persons.

According to the 1880 United States Federal Census, Caroline Clements was documented as residing in the household of J.D.(John Darby) Windham/head of household. Caroline's children named in the 1880 census were: John W. Clements, Done Clements, Frank Clements, Huldah Clements, Jude Clements and Jim Clements. According to the date (month/year) of the 1880 census and the date of Mariah's birth, it appears that Caroline Clements was pregnant with Mariah at the time the census was taken. It is also established that Caroline was living within the household of John Darby Windham at the time of the 1880 census as "Cook and Washer Woman" and her children were named as "Farm Hand and Servants". Caroline's children were documented as "Mullatto"

Mariah's father and or the father of her siblings was not named in any census information for the following years: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900. Mariah's mother was a slave/former slave owned by John Darby Windham from about 1840 through about 1870
