Samuel A. Mardis Sr., 67, of Connellsville (Bullskin Township) died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, in Westmoreland Manor, Greensburg. He was born June 24, 1940, in Connellsville, a son of Stella Mae Shaffer Mardis Carson, of Mt. Pleasant, and the late Arthur Dale Mardis. Mr. Mardis was a graduate of the former East Huntingdon Township High School. He was a former member of the Army National Guard serving as a sergeant E-5 with 1st Battalion in the 110th Infantry. He was retired from the CSX Railroad, where he worked as a brakeman-conductor. He also worked for 11 years at the former Laurel Ford for Dave Enany and he served as a deputy game warden for the State of Pennsylvania for over 25 years. Sam was also the former owner of Sam's Bait Shop at the Greenlick Dam for six years. He was a member of the Connellsville VFW and American Legion, the Polish Club of Connellsville and the F.O. Eagles of Connellsville, the South Connellsville Rod and Gun Club and the Bridgeport Sportsmen Club. He was also a member of the NRA. He attended the Pennsville Baptist Church. In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his stepfather, Walter Carson; and one brother, James Mardis.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., 111 E. Green St., Connellsville, where services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Dr. Terry V. Murray and the Rev. Robert Bixel, co-officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenlick Cemetery.
