Son of George Daugherty Johnston and Eupheradia Poellnitz; brother of George D. and G. Burke Johnston; husband of Annie Evelyn Jones and Frances Castleman; father of Charles Jr.; first cousin of Mayor William A. Gunter of Montgomery.

He covered the prize fight between John L. Sullivan and Jake Kilrain, staged on a Pearl River barge in 1889. Sullivan won the bout, outlawed by authorities in 76 rounds.

Charles Jr. is a prominent planter and business man. His grandson, Henry Poellnitz Johnston is vice president of the Birmingham News and publisher of the Huntsville Times.
