Lowell was born on March 6, 1928, to Ernest E. and Myrtle Holland in Loraine, Texas. On March 3, 1950, Lowell married Wanda June Patton in Big Spring, Texas. They were married for 61 years before June passed away on March 7, 2011. Lowell served in the United States Marine Corps, receiving the Purple Heart for his service in the Korean War, where he lost his eyesight in frontline combat.
