PHILLIP WINTERS
July 27, 1925 ~ Mar. 30, 2011

OCEAN PARK — Philip M. Winters, 85, died at his Ocean Park residence on March 30, 2011. He was born July 27, 1925, in Galena, Kan., the eldest of six children born to Ted and Hazel (Stephens) Winters. His early years were spent in Kansas, Colorado and South Dakota before moving with his parents to California as a teenager. He attended grade school in South Dakota and high school in Lindsay, Calif.

While still a teenager he became a member of the United States Merchant Marine, serving during World War II. Following the war he joined the U.S. Naval Reserves and was again called to active duty during the Korean Conflict with the Navy.

His first job as a young boy was sweeping floors in a hotel. He then took over the shoeshine stand where he worked after attending school. Following the war, he began selling appliances at Montgomery Ward in 1947 and literally never quit selling "something." In 1989 after moving to the Peninsula from Woodburn, Ore., he became the owner and operator of the Hearing Aid Center in Klipsan Beach, which continued until his passing.

A member of both Ocean Park Eagles and Long Beach Elks lodges, he was also active as a member of Rotary, Kiwanis, American Legion, Tri-State Hearing Society, Washington State Hearing Society and the International Hearing Aid Society. In past years he was a Sunday school teacher and deacon while a member of the Baptist church.

Mr. Winters enjoyed golf, bowling, painting, socializing with his many friends, flirting with all the women, and he dearly loved his coffee.

He and Betty J. Finley were married June 7, 1946, in Monmouth, Ore. She survives residing at the family home in Ocean Park. Also surviving are sons, Ted Winters of Gold Hill, Ore., and Richard Winters of Eugene, Ore.; daughter, Rebecca Winters of Ocean Park; a brother, James Winters of Bend, Ore.; his sisters, Carole Bastian and Mary Cuevas of El Cajon, Calif., and Jeanette Roush of Sheridan, Wyo.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on April 3, at Penttila's Chapel by The Sea in Long Beach. Private committal will be at Fir Crest Cemetery in Monmouth, Ore. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and his guest book is available at www.penttilaschapel.com.
