THE PASSING OF JOHN LAWTON
Mr. John Lawton, one of the best known and most highly respected residents of this county, died Friday morning, May 18th, at his home three miles east of Larned, after a long and severe sickness of tumorous cancer of the stomach. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in this city Saturday afternoon by Rev. James Irwin, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Hutchinson. The body was buried in the Larned cemetery.
The deceased was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, August 10th, 1833. He was married November 3rd, 1859, to Miss Elizabeth Walker. Mr. Lawton was the father of eight children, four sons and four daughters, six of whom survive him. He became a member of the Upper Buffalo Presbyterian church at Buffalo, Pennsylvania, when a young man. After his removal to Kansas in March, 1877, he united with the First Presbyterian church of Larned and was for many years one of the elders of this church. He was in every sense of the term, a consistent Christian gentleman, a devoted husband and a kind and indulgent father.
The editor of the Eagle-Optic desires to pay his tribute to the memory of the deceased. We had known Mr. Lawton personally for nearly twenty years. He was a quiet, unasssuming, peaceful, honorable gentleman. In his dealings with his fellow men he was always fair and just, ever endeavoring to do by others as he would have others do by him. Industrious and enterprising and public spirited, his life was an example well worthy of emulation, and his death a loss to the community. John Lawton has gone to his rest, but his charitable deeds, his correct Christian life, his earnest, true American manhood, remain as examples in the memory of those who knew him and mourn his departure.
