New Carlisle---Carl L. Ekstrom, 83, civic leader and former president of the New Carlisle Town Board, died at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, after an illness.
Carl was the owner/operator of Ekstrom's Furniture & Appliance for 40 years.
He was born June 17, 1911, in Boyne Falls, MI., and lived in New Carlisle since 1924.
On June 26, 1938, in New Carlisle, Carl married Margaret M. Murphy. She survives with two daughters, AnnNita McDonald of Gary, IN., and Marsha Kirsch of Kansas City, MO.; two grandchildren; two sisters, Lena Ekstrom of New Carlisle and Sarah Haack of Sturgis, MI.; and a brother, Joseph, of Rouge River, OR… A son John died in 1985.
He was a member of the New Carlisle United Methodist Church, the New Carlisle, the Gleaners Club, the Hill & Dale Club, Hamilton Grove Men's Club, Olive Township Library Board and the Masonic Lodge 204, Terre Coupee. He was a graduate Michigan State University.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the church. Burial will be in Hamilton Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday in Kaniewski Funeral Home, 201 S. Filbert St., and New Carlisle. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
