Enlisted, January 24, 1916, in Troop C, Squadron A Cavalry, NYNG, New York City. He mustered in for Mexican border service with Troop C, June 30, 1916, New York City. Squadron A Cavalry was assigned to Camp McAllen, Texas, with the 6th New York Division ( later to be the 27th Division ). He returned to New York with his Troop, December 23, 1916, and mustered out of border service, December 28, 1916.

World War 1, called into service with Troop C, Squadron A Cavalry, as the Mess Sergeant for the Troop. Squadron A reorganized for the war as the 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division.

He attended, OTC, at Plattsburgh Barracks, NY, and commissioned, 1st Lieutenant, Field Artillery, November 27, 1917. He was assigned to the 308th Field Artillery, 78th Division, at Fort Dix, NJ. He was transfer to a number of artillery units. In May of 1918 he shipped out for France, serving at Camp de Meucon, France and promoted to Captain, July 15, 1918, with the 41st Field Artillery. He returned to the States September 2, 1918, and discharged from the service February 3, 1919, Camp Custer, MI.
