Laurie Ellis, former Nassau County Sheriff, who had been living in a Nassau nursing home, died died Thursday, January 12, 2012 at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville after a long illness. He was 71 years old.

Ellis, a Hilliard native and son of a veteran lawman, joined the Sheriff's Office in 1965. He was first elected in 1984 promising to rid the county of drugs and drug violence, and got re-elected in 1988. He lost the 1992 Democratic primary to Dan Lee, who was then defeated by Ray Geiger.

Funeral service were held at First Baptist Church, 45090 Green Ave., Callahan, FL on Tuesday, January 17, at the same church, with burial at Pickett Cemetery in Jacksonville.
