WANDA TURPIN

Wanda Faye Turpin, 87, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, in Las Vegas - just shy of her 88th birthday. Wanda was born in Chicago, Feb. 1, 1924, to Wayman and Olive Welborn. She was the youngest of five children and spent her childhood playing in and exploring the streets of Chicago, enjoying a rich high school experience, and working a variety of jobs. She married Marine and Pearl Harbor hero Raymond Turpin in 1945, who six weeks into their marriage, had to leave for 18 months for the World War II occupation of Japan. They had three children, Pamela (1948), Raye Jean (1951), and Ray Jr. (1957). They were married 64 years, parted only in death when Raymond passed away Aug. 21, 2009. The Turpin Family moved to Las Vegas in 1966. Wanda was as an avid golfer and bowler, who enjoyed the outdoors, her Pomeranian pups, beautiful backyard pool, and in her healthier days, a good scotch. She loved spending time with her family and always looked her best, no matter the occasion. Even in her final months, Wanda always was dressed beautifully, well-accesorized, and sporting the latest in shoe fashion. Wanda worked as the Clark County Deputy Registrar for Vital Statistics for 17 years, and in that position, was responsible for signing the county's birth and death certificates, including the birth certificates of her grandchildren born in Las Vegas. She retired in 1985. Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond Turpin; siblings, Devoe, Harry, and Leroy Welborn; and sister, Norma Cronquist.
