William James Croot was born in Chester, NJ. He is found with his parents in the 1880 and 1885 Censuses there.

He moved to Iowa--where two of his brothers and two of his uncles lived--sometime between 1885 and 1900 when he is found as a farmer worker in Orthel, Hancock Co IA in 1900 and a farmer in Britt, Hancock Co IA in 1910.

He is listed as a resident of Woodbury Co IA in 1917 draft records and is found as a farmer in Liston, Woodbury Co IA in the 1920 and 1930 Censuses and in Moville, Woodbury Co IA in 1940.

There are voter registration records in Madera Co CA that appear to be him and his wife, so it is likely they were in California sometime between 1925 and 1930 but returned to Iowa by 1930. His in-laws, George and Mary Fein, moved from Indiana to Iowa by 1910, but were in California c.1927 before returning to Iowa. Earlier, his brother George was in California for a period before returning to Iowa and several of his wife's siblings moved to California.

He married Katherine/Katie Fein 13 Jan 1901 in Harrison Co IN. It is not clear how they met since he was in Iowa in 1900 and she in Indiana. They had two daughters:

* Franciska Day 1902-1964
* Esta/Asta Elaine Ross 1909-1991 who lived and died in California
