Gerald L. Bertucci, Sr., (Jerry), a retired educator/guidance counselor and athletic coach in the Orleans Parish and St. Tammany Parish school systems, died on September 12, 2005, from complications of a long-term illness during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, while he was evacuated to Vicksburg, MS. He was 77.
"Mr. Jerry" as he was know to many, was born and raised in New Orleans, was a former resident of Slidell, La., for many years, and lived in Picayune, MS., for the past 19 years. Prior to his lifelong career in education and athletics, Mr. Bertucci attended Jesuit High School, was an outstanding athlete, and contributed to two state championship football teams as a Jesuit Blue Jay. He later attended LSU and played football for the LSU Tigers. Mr. Bertucci taught, counseled and coached all sports programs in both Orleans Parish and St. Tammany Parish Schools.
During his retirement and up until his illness, he was a volunteer guidance counselor at Pope John Paul High School in Slidell, La. He is also past president of the Ozone Camellia Club on the north shore, and was also active in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, District 8. He was a fourth degree Knights of Columbus.
He was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Emile A. Bertucci, Sr., and preceded in death by his brother Dr. Emile A. Bertucci, Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Berry Bertucci; two sons: Gerald L. Bertucci, Jr. (Jay), and Roy Berry Bertucci; three daughters: Donna Claire Bertucci, Diane Fortner, and Connie Swiler; One brother, Dr. Alvin C. Bertucci, and seven grandchildren. Mr. Bertucci was an active member of the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Picayune, MS. Burial was held on Thursday, September 15, 2005, in Picayune.
