HARRIET GOSSOP GILYEART
Harriet Gilyeart was born in Hull, England, March 15th, 1838, residing in that country until 1858 when she sailed for America, arriving at Peoria, Ill., Nov. 21. and on Dec. 16th she was joined in marriage to Mr. John Gilyeart. To them were born 10 children, one dying in infancy, and George, who was drowned in this neighborhood at the age of sixteen years.
--Her husband passed to the great beyond January 10, 1900.
--She came from Peoria county, Ill., to Des Moines county, Iowa, in 1868, and from there to the home place in Henry county in 1873. In January, 1907, the family moved into Mount Union where she peacefully passed away on May 9th, at 9 o'clock a.m., at the ripe old age of 73 years, 1 month and 24 days. At her bedside when the summons came were gathered her eight children as follows: Henretta Chilson, from near Winfield; Edson from near Ottumwa; Lena Swartz, of Mt. Union; Bristow Gilyeart from near Kirksville; Lizzie Seales from near Wyman; Fred Gilyeart, from Winfield; Bert Gilyeart, who resides at the home farm one mile from Mt. Union, Miss Ella Gilyeart, of the home in Mt. Union.
Mrs. Gilyeart was baptized in infancy and was received into the M.E. church, Mt. Union, on probation January 1895.
---Mrs. Gilyeart was afflicted for a long time but this affliction only drew her closer to her heavenly Father and with an abiding and unfaltering trust in His promises she fell into that dreamless sleep that marks the termination of this life.
--The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon of last week in the M. E. church, Mt. Union, where gathered a large number of the old friends and neighbors of the deceased and who followed the casket to the cemetery at Trinity where the body was placed by the side of her loved ones who had gone before.
--In the home and community she will be greatly missed. Besides her eight children she leaves eighteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren who mourn her loss, besides many friends of the years who loved her.
--A woman who loved her family and friends and who during the thirty-eight years spent in the county surrounded herself with a host of friends.
