Anna Marie Henriette Niewoehner was born on September 19, 1887 in Indiana, to Rev. Gustav Heinrich Julius "Henry" Niewoehner and Anna Barbara (Rathsam) Niewoehner. Her mother died in 1890, and her father remarried Emilie Nordhorn in 1891. The family moved to Viola, Minnesota in the mid 1890's, to Oregon County, Missouri around the turn of the century, to West Bend, Iowa for a year or two, and then to Crawford County, Iowa around 1905. It was while the family was living in West Bend that Anna met her future husband, William Conrad Schmidt. William and Anna carried on a long distance relationship for a few years, until William went down to Denison and married Anna in Denison on March 12, 1911. William and Anna lived in West Bend, Iowa for a few years, where they had their first two sons, William Henry
"Bill" Schmidt and Robert Carl "Bobby" Schmidt. They moved up to the area of Guckeen, Minnesota from March 1916 until they moved back to West Bend, Iowa about 1918. In 1919, they lost their son Bobby to diabetic ketoacidosis, because there was no insulin available at the time. Just two weeks later, Anna gave birth to their third son, Gilbert George "Red" Schmidt. In 1921, Roland Richard "Dick" Schmidt was born, and in 1924, their last son, Donald Stanley Schmidt was born. In the mid 1930's, they moved to Mallard, Iowa. Anna died on April 25, 1942.

Anna Henriette (Niewoehner) Schmidt's obituary, as printed in the April 30, 1942 edition of the Mallard Leader (Mallard, Iowa), reads as follows:

"The deceased, Anna Henrietta, was the second youngest daughter of Rev. Henry Niewoehner and his wife Anna nee Ratsom [typo, should be Rathsam]. She was born in Indiana, on 19 of September, 1887. Here she was also baptized. She was confirmed at Denison, Iowa in the year 1905.

On March 12, 1911, she was united in marriage with Mr. William Schmidt of West Bend, with whom she lived through good and bad for a little over thirty-one years. This union was blessed with five sons. One of which, Robert, died at the age of four years. Their home was made near West Bend, with the exception of the years 1916 and 1917, when they lived in Minnesota. Seven years ago, they moved tot their present home.

With her family she became a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church at Mallard, and was a member of the church when she died.

During the last few years she was very ill and at practically all times suffered great pain, and the word of God was her only comfort.

Last Saturday, April 25, 1941, at about 12:30 p.m. God finally released her of this earthly suffering and took her, as we are confident, to His home where there is no more suffering, pain and death. She reached the age of fifty-four years, seven months, and six days.

The bereaved are her sorrowing husband, William Schmidt; four sons, William Schmidt Jr., of Curlew; Gilbert, Roland, and Donald, all at home. One grandson, Roger Schmidt. Besides, three brothers: William Niewoehner of Willow City, N.D., Henry Niewoehner of Upham, N.D., and Roland Niewoehner of Harlan, Montana; three sisters: Mrs. Adelheid Andresson, of Chicago, Mrs. Gertrude Arnold of Denison, Mrs. Marie Jensen of Schaller, Iowa; a half brother Emil Niewoehner and her step-mother, both of Denison, together with a host of friends and acquaintances."
