STANLEY, Thomas Bahnson Jr., 70, of 100 Hunters Green Drive, Stanleytown, and Hobe Sound, Jupiter Island, FL, died Wednesday, October 29,1997, at Jupiter Medical Center. Stanley was retired chairman and chief executive officer of Stanley Furniture Co. Inc., and group president of the Interior Furnishing Group of Mead Corp., which merged with Stanley in 1969. In 1970, he was named to the board of directors of the Mead Corp., a position he held until this year. He retired from Stanley Furniture Company in 1974. Stanley was born January 9,1927, in Martinsville, a son of the late Thomas Bahnson Stanley Sr., former governor of Virginia, and the late Anne Pocahontas Bassett Stanley. Stanley received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Virginia Military Institute and a degree in commerce from the University of Virginia. He also completed the advanced management program at Harvard Business School. Stanley was the original director (1946) of the Stanley Land & Lumber Co. and was a member of the Southern Furniture Manufacturers Association, serving as president and director in 1966, and as chairman in 1967. He served on the Henry County School Board from 1957 until 1980, and was chairman of the Board of Trustees for Ferrum College from 1977 until 1979. He was a former director of Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. Stanley had been on the board of directors of a number of Martinsville and Henry County businesses including Piedmont Trust Bank, 1973-1995, MainStreet BankGroup Inc., 1977-1997 and Fieldcrest Mills, 1977-1985, the Hobe Sound Company, 1989-1997, serving as treasurer until 1996; Jupiter Island Club Inc. since 1978 serving as treasurer 1996-1997; Hobe Sound Yacht Club, chairman of the building and grounds committee for several years and had been governor of the Island Club. He was a member of the Rocky Mount Masonic Lodge #201, Greenwood Gunning Club, Sons of American Revolution, Kazim Temple, Charter member of the Stanleytown Ruritan Club, a member of the USSGA, The Whiz Kids and The High Point Club. Stanley was a member and trustee of Stanleytown United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Barnes Stanley, whom he married September 10,1949; three children, Thomas Bahnson Stanley III of Atlanta, GA, Susan Walker Stanley Taylor of Winter Park, FL, and Andrew Bassett Stanley of Atlanta; eight grandchildren, Phillip James Modesitt, Greta Kristen Modesitt, Hannah Stanley Kalan, Walker Stanley Kalan, Andrew Hastings Stanley, Julia Hastings Stanley, Emma McDonnell Hust and Caroline Peach Hust; a sister, Mrs. Hugh H. (Anne) Chatham of Stanleytown; and a brother, John David Stanley Sr. of Yerington, NV. A funeral service will be held Satu rday at 2 p.m. at Stanleytown United Methodist Church. The Rev. Charles Wickham will officiate. Entombment will be in Roselawn Abbey at Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends at Collins Funeral Services Chapel, Bassett, From 7 until 8:30 p.m. Friday.
