Civil War Union Army Officer. In February 1859, at 21 he was admitted to the New Jersey Bar. On August 25, 1862, he enrolled in the Union Army, and was attached to the 14th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry as a Major, being mustered in on August 26, 1862. He spent relatively little time with his unit, being appointed to a number of staff positions as the war went on. He became Provost Marshall under Colonel William S. Truex, then was appointed Inspector General of the 3rd Division of the III Corps on September 5, 1863, then was attached to the staff of Brig. General Washington Lafayette Elliot until October 4, 1863, then served under Brig. General Joseph Bradford Carr from October 5, 1863 to December 4, 1863. On December 11, 1863, Major Vrendenburgh was appointed Inspector General of the III Corps by Maj. General William French. When the 3rd Division of the III Corps was transferred to the VI Corps on March 25, 1864, he remained at the headquarters of the 3rd Division on the staff of Brig. General James B. Ricketts. After the July 9, 1864, Battle of Monocacy River in Maryland decimated the officer corps of his regiment, Major Vredenburgh requested permission to be transferred from the staff of Gen. Ricketts, and return to the 14th New Jersey. His request on August 24, 1864, was then honored and he was ordered back to his unit. He was present and took part in all the battles in which his regiment was engaged for the next month. At the September 19, 1864 3rd Battle of Winchester, Virgina, near Opequan Creek, he was killed while bravely leading a charge of his troops on Confederate positions.
