Anna Margaret "Maggie" Lindemann was born February 12, 1864, in the village of Machtlos, Hessen-Kassel, Germany. Her father, Dietrich Lindemann, died shortly after her birth, and her mother, Anna Katherine "Dine" (Körzell) Lindemann, died when Maggie was 4 years old. Maggie and her brother Mike were raised by their uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Friedrich Körzell, in Essen. She and her brother Mike immigrated to America on 25 Nov 1883 with the Conrad & Martha Schmidt family (uncle and aunt of Maggie's future husband, Karl Schmidt). They settled in Benton County, Iowa, where Maggie worked at the School for the Blind in Vinton, Iowa, with Mike's bride, Elizabeth Martha "Lizzie" Schmidt (a daughter of Conrad and Martha Schmidt). Maggie married Karl Georg "Chas" Schmidt on 9 Dec 1887 in Taylor Township, Benton County, Iowa, and they lived in Dysart, Iowa until about 1894, where they had their first four children (William Conrad, Elizabeth Marie, Edward Dietrich, and Charles George "Chas" Jr.). Around 1894, they moved up to a farm west of West Bend, Iowa, where they had three more children (Michael Frederick, Anna Margaret, and Henry John). Karl died in 1933, and her son Edward lived with her (since Ed was a bachelor and she was a widow) so they could help one another get by. Both she and Ed began to grow ill around the same time (Ed with cancer, and Maggie with bronchitis), and so she and Ed moved in with her daughter Annie (Schmidt) Krug. Maggie died June 5, 1943, one month to the day after her son Ed died.

Anna Margaret "Maggie" (Lindemann) Schmidt's obituary, as printed in the June 10, 1943 edition of the West Bend Journal (West Bend, Iowa), reads as follows:

"Obituary of Mrs. Chas. Schmidt, Sr.
----
Mrs. Charles Schmidt, Sr., passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Krug, in West Bend on Saturday, June 5, at 2:00 p.m. She became sick recently and apparently was gaining, but on Friday she grew worse and her children were called to her bedside. She gradually failed until her death as stated above.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon and were very largely attended. They were in charge of Rev. G.R. McDowell. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers--Carl, Louie, and Otto Schafer, and Wm., Gilbert, and Donald Schmidt. Interment was in the West Bend cemetery. Jerry Schutter had charge of the funeral.

Anna Margaret Lindemann was born in Machtlos, Germany, February 12, 1864, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Deitrick Lindemann. Her father died when she was two weeks old and her mother when she was five years old [she was actually a couple months shy of being five years old when her mother died]. She made her home with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Hurtzel. In 1844 [this is a typo, it should be 1884], she came to Iowa, locating at Vinton, Iowa, where she worked in the School for the Blind.

She was united in marriage to George Karl Schmidt in 1887. They made their home in Dysart, Iowa. In 1894, they moved to West Bend.

Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt, as follows: Wm. O. [typo, should be Wm. C.] of Mallard; Edward O. [typo, should be Edward D.], who preceded her in death just one month; Mrs. G. F. Schafer and Charles G. of West Bend; Mike F. and Henry J. of Rolfe; and Mrs. John Krug of West Bend.

Besides the children, she leaves one brother, Mike Lindemann, of Humboldt, Ia. One brother and one sister preceded her in death in Germany [German church records show she was also preceded in death by another two infant brothers before she was born, but she may not have been aware of that].

There are 34 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Her husband, George Karl Schmidt, died October 21, 1933 [typo, should be October 22]. Since then, she made her home with her son, Edward, until he retired from the farm last fall.

Mrs. Schmidt was baptized when she was three years of age, and was a member of the West Bend Methodist church.

Among those from a distance who came to attend the funeral were Henry Lindemann, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lindemann, Mr. and Mrs. Hellis Verbrugge [typo, should be Gilles Verbrugge], Mike Lindemann and Mary Lindemann, all of Humboldt; Staff Sgt. Otto Schafer of ValDosta, Ga.; Pvt. Clarence Krug of North Camp Polk, La.; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Heckroth, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Barta and daughters, and John Krug, all of Dysart; Mr. and Mrs. Jim Elmore and son, Harvey Broadwell, and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lee of Algona."
