Georg Karl Schmidt was born in Machtlos, Hessen-Kassel, Germany on May 5, 1864, to Dietrich Schmidt Jr. and Martha (Lindemann) Schmidt. On June 6, 1881, he immigrated to America aboard the SS Silesia. He settled in Kansas (most likely Ellsworth County) for two years, then went to Dysart, Iowa. On 9 Dec 1887, he married Anna Margaret "Maggie" Lindemann (also of Machtlos), in Taylor Township, Benton County, Iowa, who worked at the School for the Blind in nearby Vinton, Iowa. They made their home in Dysart, Iowa, and in 1890, Karl received his citizenship. Karl and Maggie had their first four children (William Conrad, Elizabeth Marie, Edward Dietrich, and Charles "Chas" George Jr.) in Tama County. They moved up to a farm west of West Bend, Iowa in 1893, and had three more children (Michael Frederick, Anna Margaret, and Henry John). Karl died of stomach cancer on October 22, 1933.

Karl's obituary from the 26 October 1933 edition of the West Bend Journal (West Bend, Iowa):

"GEORGE KARL SCHMIDT

George Karl (Chas.) Schmidt passed away at his home west of town Saturday night after a lingering illness of about three years, although he carried on the work about the farm until a few days before his death. Mr. Schmidt suffered from cancer of the stomach. Everything possible was done for his relief, but to no avail. Funeral services were held at the Apostolic Christian church Tuesday afternoon. Interment was made in the West Bend cemetery.

George Karl Schmidt was born in Hessen Kassel, Germany, May 5, 1864. He was schooled and reared in Germany. At the age of seventeen he sailed for America, locating in Kansas for two years, then he moved to Dysart, Iowa.

In the fall of 1887, he was united in marriage to Anna Margaret Lindemann. To this union seven children were born as follows: William C., Edward D., Charles G., Mrs. John Krug and Henry J., of West Bend, Mrs. G.F. Schafer of Livermore, and Mike F. of Rolfe.

He has lived in this vicinity since 1892 [note: this is probably inaccurate, since his son Charles was born while they were still down in Tama County, Iowa, in 1893, and Karl's wife's obituary states they moved to West Bend in 1894].

Besides his wife and children, he leaves to mourn his death two brothers and one sister, who live in Germany, and 30 grandchildren.

Those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. C. Heckroth, Mrs. Nelson and daughter Pearl, all of Dysart, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. Mike Lindemann, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Lindemann, and Mr. and Mrs. Werburger, and Carl, Henry, and Marie Lindemann all of Humboldt, Ia.

The Journal extends sympathy to the sorrowing family."
