Norma Jean Burrell, 81, a resident of Douglas, passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, at Memorial Hospital of Converse County in Douglas with her family surrounding her after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Norma was born April 18, 1930, at the ranch home of her grandparents west of Douglas, the eldest of seven children of Arthur E. and Mabel (Sanford) Hageman. She was raised on a small homestead dry farm north of Douglas. She attended the Walker Creek one-room school through the eighth grade and graduated from Douglas High School in 1948. Following graduation, she worked on a ranch north of Lost Springs for a year, then attended the University of Wyoming for a 10-week summer session. She then was granted an Emergency Teaching Certificate and taught at the rural one-room Ballard School in northwest Niobrara County. After completing several correspondence and extension courses through University of Wyoming, she taught two more years at the Cow Creek one-room country school north of Lance Creek in northern Niobrara County.

On Aug. 3, 1952, she was married to Frank Burrell of Rabun Gap, Ga. They were the parents of three children, Jeanne, James and Janet. They lived and worked on several ranches in the Douglas area, and later she helped her husband in the operation of the Gallagher Freight Lines local freight deliveries. In 1961, they purchased the Rogers Dairy, which they operated as Douglas Dairy for approximately 15 years as a wholesale and retail delivery business.

After they sold the Dairy in 1976, Norma began working at the Converse County ASCS Office, retiring in 1995. In 1997, she began working in the Senior Employment Program at the Douglas Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service, retiring from there in 2003.

She was an active member and served on several boards and committees of First Baptist Church for many years, was a North Platte Homemakers Club member for more than 50 years, and was a Christmas Club member, 4-H Sewing Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother and Election Board Clerk for many years. Her hobbies and interests included cooking, swing, painting, cake decorating, crafts, traveling, hunting and fishing. Most important in her life was her husband and family.

Norma is survived by her husband Frank of Douglas; children Jeanne Burrell of Glenrock, Jim (Joni) Burrell of Riverton, and Janet (Jim) Hinckley of Douglas; siblings Lorraine Broyles of Torrington, Arthur Hageman Jr. of Douglas, Bill Hageman of Hartville, Joanne Herrod of Rohnert Park, Calif., Jim Hageman of Douglas and Doris Rohrer of Evansville; grandchildren Holli (Matt) Zdrojewski, Jason Burrell, Janae (Allen) Archuleta, Erik Ramirez, Ryan (Ashley) Hinckley, Jennica (Fernando) Nevarez; and great-grandchildren Rhett Williams, McCall Garner, Jayden Archuleta, Jack Burrell, Carter Archuleta, Jaylea Nevarez, Raymond Ramirez, Easton Hinckley, Elliona Nevarez and Braxton Zdrojewski.

Norma is preceded in death by her parents and great-granddaughter Natalea Nevarez.

Burial will take place in Douglas Park Cemetery.
