John Riley Quesenberry was born in 1826 in the portion of Wythe County, Virginia that became Pulaski County in 1839. In 1845, at the age of 19 he married Nancy Moore in Mount Airy, North Carolina. Prior to the Civil War, John and Nancy lived as farmers in Pulaski County. In the 1850 US Census, he is the neighbor of Harvey Gray, whose son William later marries John’s daughter Mary.

He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House - [one of about 3,000 Confederate prisoners captured on May 12, 1864]. and was a prisoner at Pt. Lookout from 5/18/64 to 7/30/64 .
As a prisoner of war, on July 30, 1864, John was transported to Elmira Prison (called ‘Hellmira’ by the inmates) in Elmira, New York. He was held prisoner from 8/2/64 till his death 2/13/65, and was buried in grave number 2072.

This information of burial is incorrect, someone else is buried in 2072. Just wanted to post it here due to online information has it on sites and is wrong. SO to help stop the error. 2-5-2011
