Joe R. Champ (1928 - 2012)

Joe R. Champ, 83, a retired lieutenant colonel, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 26, 2012. Funeral: 12:30 p.m. Monday in Laurel Land Memorial Chapel. Interment: Laurel Land Memorial Park of Fort Worth. Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Laurel Land Funeral Home.

Joe was born Nov. 17, 1928, in Temple. At the age of 20 he joined the National Guard. A few years later he met and married his wife, Glenda. Soon they welcomed three beautiful children into the world. As soon as his boys could carry a rifle he had them out in the woods learning to march a cadence. He spent his free time with his family camping, hunting and fishing. During his 35 years of service in the National Guard he received the Meritorious Service Award and served as the executive officer for the 2nd Brigade, 49th Armored Division. He was a loving father, wonderful husband and true friend whose spirit will remain in our hearts forever. Joe was preceded in death by his son, Robert Champ.

Survivors: He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Glenda Champ; sons, Randy Champ and Ronald Champ; daughter-in-law, Rhonda Champ; grandchildren, Robyn Champ Tanner and husband, Scott, Ryan Champ and Rachel Champ; great-grandchild, Johnathan Champ.
