William H. Snell, 79, 761 North University, Provo, professor emeritus of Industrial Arts at BYU, died this morning at his home. Prof. Snell had served the university for over a half century.

He was born June 1, 1887, in Spanish Fork, a son of Rufus and Ellen Celesta Snell. He married Iva Rasmussen in 1907 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They had 10 children.

Prof. Snell received his B.A. degree in 1918 and his M.S. degree in Business Administration in 1939 from Brigham Young University. In 1960 the William Snell Industrial Education Building was named in his honor.

Graduate work took him to Bradley Polytechnic College at Peoria, Ill. in 1919. That year he bought the first motorized equipment for the new mechanical arts shop at BYU, now the Brimhall Building.

Prof. Snell joined the BYU faculty in 1915 as an instructor in English, and in 1917 added woodwork to his duties. He had previously taught in Cowley, Wyo., from 1912 to 1913.

In 1919, he became assistant director of Mechanical Arts under the deanship of Dr. Carl F. Eyring, and headed the Department of Mechanical Arts and Drawing from 1926 to 1955. He taught Civil Engineering subects from 1926 to 1952.

He served as chairman of Student Accomodations from 1928 to 1935, and was superintendant of buildings and rounds from 1943 to 1946, during which time the Wymount Vllage [Village], heating plant and Knight Mangum Hall were built.

Active his entire life in the LDS Church, Prof. Snell had served as an officer and teacher in the Sunday Schools, MIA and Priesthood Quorums of Cowey, Wyo., and Manavu, Provo Fourth and University Wards in Provo.

Funeral services will be announced by Berg Mortuary of Provo.
