Amos P. Blosser, Old County Resident, Dies

Passes Away At Home South Of Goshen Saturday Afternoon

Was owner of Amusement Park Built On Island in Elkhart River.

Amos P. Blosser, 75 years old, and a native of Elkhart county, died at his home just south of Goshen, on State Road 15, Saturday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock, of uraemic poisoning and heart trouble. He had been seriously ill and had undergone an operation more than a year ago, but had apparently recovered to a great extent, but again became seriously ill only a short time ago.
Mr. Blosser is survived by his wife, Alice, two sons, Dura Blosser, of Detroit, and Asher Blosser, of Goshen; a daughter, Mrs. Abe Shelly, of Foraker; and three grandchildren. Marion Shelly, a student at Indiana university; Dorothy Blosser, of Detroit; and Harold Blosser, of Goshen. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at Three o'clock at the home. The Rev. Paul Brosy will officiate, and burial will be made in Violett Cemetery.
He was born 7 June 1854, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Blosser. His ancestors came from Virginia and settled near Youngstown, Ohio, and in 1850 three brothers, Peter, Joel, and Enos came to Elkhart county, and all took government land in the vicinity of Foraker, and it was on the Peter Blosser homestead near Foraker that A. P. Blosser was born and where he lived until 1903. All three of the brothers who came to this county together, and all of their children, with the exception of Elias Blosser, shoe merchant at Nappanee, and a son of Enos Blosser are now dead. Elias Blosser is the father of Merrill Blosser, whose cartoon strip appears daily in the News-Times.
In 1903 Mr. Blosser moved to the home south of Goshen, where he had resided ever since. At that time he first established the amusement park on an island in the Elkhart river, which he developed during the past 25 years.

Amos P. Blosser was born in this county June 7, 1854. His father, Peter Blosser, was born in Rockingham county, Va., Aug. 3, 1816, and removed with his parents, John and Barbara Blosser, to Mahoning county, O., when he was about 10 years of age; he was married in that county Jan. 25, 1880, to Mary Ann, daughter of William Reed, of the same county. She was born Dec., 15, 1821. They removed to this county in June, 1851, settling on the farm on which the family now resides. They have 3 children: Barbara, born Oct. 29, 1851; Susanna, Nov. 10, 1860, and Amos P. Mrs. Blosser died May 20, 1861, and is buried at the Yellow Creek cemetery, in Harrison tp. He and his family are worthy members of the Mennonite Church. Amos, the subject of this sketch, has been raised and educated in this county; since attaining the age of manhood he has traveled considerably both in the East and West. He has a good farm of 160 acres in sec. 9. He takes great delight in raising fine stock, which he has been carrying on to a considerable extent. At present his time is occupied with his bees, of which he has a large number of stands, and under his skillful managemant they promise a source of great profit. P. O., Goshen.
