Born William Fleming Warren (Fleming was his Grandfather) Grandpa changed his middle name to Curtis, and subsequently named a son Curtis as well.
Grandpa was a bit of an odd duck. He abandoned the family when my father James Frederick Warren who was the youngest child of the 9 who survived to adulthood, was around 10 years old.
Grandpa ran off with a gal named Gladys Cooper who was previously married to a Joseph Randle "P I" Wolfe who was a Barber in Flora, Clay, Illinois for many years. She and P.I. had two boys Ethen and Harlan. Grandpa Bill and Gladys had one daughter Lois, but by this time he had moved out to Colorado from Illinois and it took several years for all the kids to catch up to him and get reacquainted, some made amends and others had little use for him as he left Grandma with a bunch of kids and no support. Amazingly all his 5 boys grew to be men of remarkable integrity and character, and the 4 girls grew up to be wonderful ladies!!! The family lost track of Lois and no one has heard from her in many years (as of 6/2013).
Grandpa died one summer morning while sitting at the breakfast table having coffee (have also heard at neighbors having coffee), just slumped over and was gone. Gladys called the kids and said "come get rid of him", she wanted nothing to do with him, however, when a few of them got out there to make arrangements to bring him back to Illinois for burial she had changed her mind and he was buried there in Grand Junction where they lived. (as told to Duane Warren by Grandpa's oldest child Ellen Genevieve Warren Richmond)
