Russell Tomlinson Whiting was a prominent businessman in Bridgeport. The Whiting Homestead stood for many years on the site of the Seaside Club and it was at that place that Mr. Whiting was born. At 16 years of age he went away to New York where he remained about 12 years. The grocery business in Bridgeport was established by him in 1875.

He was a 32nd degree Mason and a senior warden of Christ church. He was also secretary of the “Forty Seven club” composed of men born in 1847. He was an expert yachtsman and spent much of his spare time on the water.

He was 74 years of age and was president of the Whiting wholesale and retail grocery store and vice president of the Mechanics and Farmer savings bank. He had also served on the board of directors for the First National Bank.

The funeral was held Friday afternoon at 2:30 from his residence 1276 Fairfield Ave. The service was conducted by the Rev Henry E Kelly and Interment was Mountain Grove Cemetery.

Surviving him is his wife Mrs Mary A. Brooks Whiting, three children Russell H and Eunice H Whiting and Mrs. Williams Narramore and four grandchildren Russell W William W and Eunice W Naramore and Sherman E. Whiting.
