Jeremiah Herndon was the son of George and Elizabeth (Stephens/Stephenson) Herndon.

His first marriage was to Frances Franky Bridwell, the daughter of Isaac and Mary (Holmes) Bridwell. From this marriage, he produced six sons:

Francis Marion Herndon
George William Herndon
Summerfield W Herndon
John Henry Herndon
Haywood Herndon
Thomas Alexander Herndon

Frances died in 1854. On 10 December 1855, he remarried to Sina Reid. No children would result from this union.

According to a book authored 100 years after his death, Jeremiah was listed as a miser who mistreated his six sons and would not allow them to know their true ages so he could get additional labor from them - though all of this was proven to be not true.

On the evening of 4 December 1874, Jeremiah, Sina and a 10-year-old colored service boy, Addison Russell, were brutally attacked by an 18-year-old service boy, Jesse Fouks. Addison died on the scene, but both Sina and Jeremiah lived long enough to give dying declarations helping to lead authorities to Jesse. Sina died on 6 December and Jeremiah on 12 December. Jesse was found with some of Jeremiah's gold on his person and was arrested. He escaped the Prince William County jail for brief time but was recaptured and eventually hung for the murders.

Numerous excavations took place in and around Jeremiah's property, known as Fairview, looking for the remaining treasure. The property is now part of the Quantico Marine base.
