BRIAN JAMES HOUSTON

Hayden resident Brian James Houston died March 25, 2006, in an accident near Grand Junction. He was 47.

Brian was born Feb. 18, 1959, in Concordia, Kan. He was the son of L. Fred and Pat Houston.

Brian married Christel Croghan on July 17, 1982, in Scotts Valley, Calif. She survives.

He graduated from Ellsworth, Kan., High School and received his bachelor's degree in music from Azusa Pacific College in Azusa, Calif. He taught Bible, history and math at Christian Heritage School and was involved in student council, student trips to Washington, D.C., and weekly chapel services.

Brian was a musician who played for more than a decade at Euzoa Bible Church, and he was a member of a jazz trio, The Usual Suspects, that played regularly at Three Peaks Grill. He and his wife directed a local choir group, The Columbine Singers, and they worked with children through Strings in the Mountains, the Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp, and Koinonia Christian Performing Arts Camp. He was the regular pianist for high school musical productions at Steamboat Springs High School.

Brian was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Patrick Steven.

Other survivors include his son, Tyler, and daughters Jessi, Melodie, Andrea, all of Steamboat Springs; his mother, Pat Houston of Valley Center, Kan.; a brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Cindy Houston of Valley Center; a sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Kent Gaston of Madera, Calif.; a father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ben and Irmgard Croghan of Grand Junction; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Michael and Deborah Croghan of New Bern, N.C., Daniel and Michelle Croghan of Felton, Calif.; nephews Aaron Gaston of Fresno, Calif., Andy Gaston, Alex Gaston, both of Madera; and nieces Amy Houston of Wichita, Kan., Katy Alarcon of Ithaca, N.Y., Kelly Croghan of Raleigh, N.C., and Lisa Croghan of New Bern, N.C.

A graveside service was held March 31, 2006, at Hayden Cemetery. A memorial service followed at Steamboat Springs High School.
