Melvin served in the Army Infantry in the South Pacific during the war, and lived at the Ekstrom homestead his entire life.

Melvin A. Ekstrom, 80, of Cass Lake, died Friday, Oct. 18, 1996, at North Country Regional Hospital. Funeral services were at American Legion Post of Cass Lake. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery in Cass Lake.

He was born Nov. 27, 1915, at Pike Bay Township on the family farm, the son of Swan and Esther (Anderson) Ekstrom. He attended the local Dave Jones School. He also completed a four-year Farm Training Program at Bemidji High School. He farmed all his life except when he served with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II.
He was a member of both the Jack Kimball American Legion Post and the VFW Post. He was a past VFW commander. He was a Pike Bay Township supervisor for many years. He also served as the fire warden in his area for 45 years. Along with his dairy farming, he received many awards for his tree farming practices.

He is survived by a brother, Jim (Deloris) Ekstrom of Bemidji, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: four brothers, Rudy, Reynold, Walter and Harry; a sister, Jane Newburgh.
