Sadie J. Brooten, 93, resident of Coeur d'Alene, passed away on July 2, 2007, in Coeur d'Alene. Sadie was born in Spokane on April 28, 1914, to Joseph Assad and Alice M. Ayob. Her folks homesteaded Fern Creek in the Fourth of July Canyon, and then came to Coeur d'Alene in 1930.

Sadie married Kenneth E. Brooten, Sr., in Kellogg on June 22, 1940, and raised four children. She was very active in her community... from 1971-1980, Sadie was the Kootenai County Administrator of Senior Citizens Services, starting the first Senior Centers in Coeur d'Alene, Rathdrum, Post Falls, and Spirit Lake, and the meals and wheels programs at Rose Lake, retiring in 1980.

She received the following awards: 1976 - Joe Kappler-National Senior Citizens Hall of Fame Award; 1985 - Idaho Mother of the Year Award; 1989 - American Cancer Society Quality of Life Service Idaho State Award; 1999 - Retired Senior Volunteers Program Volunteer Program of North Idaho "Deep Apprecation Honor" for 22 years of service; 2005 - The Catholic Daughter of the Year Award. She also was a 59 1/2 year member of the Catholic Daughters.

Continuing her service to her community, she was the 2002 Honorary Chair for the Coeur d'Alene Cancer Race for the Cure, promoted by the Susan G. Koman Foundation. Sadie served on the Aging and Adult Services of North Idaho Board for three years, and was a member of the Idaho Senior Citizens Festival of Heritage Arts for three years. She was retired from the Senior Volunteer of Programs of North Idaho and a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church.

Sadie used many of the services she helped establish in Kootenai County. She deeply appreciated all of the dedicated volunteers who assisted her and other seniors with meals, driving her to doctors appointments, etc.

She was a North Idaho historian and she enjoyed traveling, antiques, crafts, writing North Idaho history features, friends, social events, family spouses, children, grandchildren and her one great-grandchild.

Sadie is survived by her sons, Kenneth E. Brooten Jr. of Florida, Kent E. Brooten, Kent, Wash.; her daughters, Barbara A. Job, Piedmont, Calif., and Bernadette J. Brooten, Cambridge, Mass.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Grace Katherine Brooks.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth on May 28, 1958.

The family suggests memorial in Sadie's name to the Lake City Senior Center, 1916 Lakewood Drive, Coeur d'Alene, ID 83814 or the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure, 5005 LBJ Fwy., Ste. 250, Dallas, TX 75244.

Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 8, 2007, at ENGLISH FUNERAL CHAPEL, Coeur d'Alene; the funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2007, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 919 Indiana Ave., Coeur d'Alene, and burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery, Coeur d'Alene.
