Hope Doty

Hope Doty, 73, died Wednesday in Salem.

She was born in Joplin, Mo. In 1941, she came to Portland, later moving to California. Twenty years later, in 1969, she returned to Scio. In 1971, she moved to Salem. She enjoyed reading and gardening.

Survivors include three daughters and two grandchildren.

At her request, there will be no services. Arrangements are by Howell Edwards-Doerksen mortuary.

Contributions may be made to the anatomical research fund, Oregon Health Science University, Portland 97201.

At age 21, 1937 Joplin MO - She had just become an RN before she married in 1938. She trained at Joplin Hospital. She applied in 1933 at age 17, just one year under age, and the head of the Catholic nursing school let her in anyway letting her say she was 18, partially because she had skipped a grade in school and was already graduated. It was during the Great Depression. She was the youngest of six siblings. Her father was a lead miner who passed away in 1936.
