Guy A. Bingham, Prominent Loop Merchant, Dies at 59
Guy A. Bingahm, 59, 1911 Cumberland St., prominent Rockford businessman and noted photographer and lecturer, died Sunday morning in St. Anthony hospital of a heart ailment.
Mr. Bingham, operator of the Camera Craft shop, 114 W. State st., and the Rockford Photo Service, 216 N. Main st., had been ill about eight weeks. He entered the hospital on Aug. 28.
Born in Stella, Neb., Aug. 7, 1891, Mr. Bingham was son of the Rev. Frank C. Bingham, a Baptist minister, and Kate Rounds Merrill Bingham. He was married to Verna L. Tabler, June 19, 1913, in Kansas City, Mo.
Coming to Rockford in 1917, during the first world war, Mr. Bingham saw the possibilities of a photo finishing industry here. He formed a partnership with W. H. Taylor, and later took in Willis T. Howe as a partner. Their first shop was Rockford Photo Service. The Camera Craft shop was opened in 1929. Members of the firms since 1944 have been Mr. Bingham, Howe and C. Carroll Thill.
Organizer of the Master Photo Finishers of America, Mr. Bingham served as executive secretary of the association for many years. He recently was granted a life membership.
With Mrs. Bingham, he traveled widely in the past years, several times serving as cruise lecturer for Raymond Whitcomb company. His colored movies of world cruises and dozens of other beauty spots of this and other countries had been shown to countless audiences across the United States.
While in London, a dinner was given in his honor by the Photo Finishers Association of England.
Mr. Bingham was a member of the Second Congregational Church, Rockford Midday and Kiwanis clubs.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Verna T. Zircher, Rockford, and Mrs. Katherine Kline, LaFayette, Ind.; one brother, Vance Bingham, Seattle, Wash., a sister, Myrtle Bingham, San Diego, Cal.; one grandson and three granddaughters. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Dr. John Gordon and Dr. Joseph C. Cleveland of Second Congregational Church, will officiate at services in the church at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Acting as pallbearers will be R. D. Nihan, Mark Hoeper, Howe, Thill, John Wendt, and Attorney Arthur Essington.
Burial will be in Willwood burial park. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 o'clock tonight at the Burpee-Wood funeral home, 420 N. Main st.
