Samuel Adams Parker was born in Compton,Stanstead Co.,Province Quebec, Sept. 17, 1834, and died at St. Luke's Hospital, Chicago, Sunday, Oct. 23, 1898, at nine o'clock p. m., aged 64 years 1 month and 6 days. The subject of this sketch attended Derby Academy in Vermont, and afterward taught school in Vermont, Wisconsin and Canada, following this profession until he was married. He was married to Miss Julia Moulton, of Coaticook, Quebec, Jan. 1, 1867. He was engaged in business in Coaticook from the time of his marriage until he removed to Iowa, in the spring of 1873. In the same year he bought the interest of N. W. Condron in the banking firm of Condron & Harris, and continued in partnership with Mr. Harris about twelve years under the firm name of Harris & Parker. It was during these early years in the development of Newell and the surrounding country that Mr. Parker by his untiring energy, good judgment and business ability, laid the foundation wisely and well of the successful banking business with which he was identified so long, and won a competence for himself. After Mr. Harris sold his interest in t h e bank and removed to California Mr. Parker conducted the business alone two or three years. In 1887 P. H. Judge and J. T. Norton became partners with Mr. Parker under the firm name of Parker, Judge & Norton.
. Mr. Parker was one of a family of eleven children. His death is the first of the eleven. He leaves to mourn his loss his devoted wife, one son and two daughters—Edwin M., Ellen M. and Marion, six brothers and four sisters, as follows: Jas. Parker, of San Francisco, Cal.; Edwin Parker, of San Diego, Cal.; Carlton T. Parker, of Minnesota; Lemuel Parker, of Manchester, Iowa; Justus J. Parker, of Holdredge, Neb.; and C. A. Parker, of Newell, Iowa: Mrs. Maria Snow, of Sherbrook, Quebec; Mrs. Alice E. Webster, of Bangor, Maine; Mrs. Mary E. Lyman, of Coaticook, Quebec; and Mrs. Priscilla E. Harris of San Bernardino,Cal. Funeral services were held at the Parker residence Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. W. B. Pinkerton, and attended by a very large number of sympathizing neighbors and friends
