"Nick Petrovich, who died in Colfax, CA Monday was one of the most romantic characters ever seen in Tonopah. He came from Bulgaria nine years ago and was gifted with a quick understanding of metals and geology and endowed with a superior training. He disdained working for wages and began leasing of the Montana Tonopah. In three months he had taken more than $175,000, netting him nearly $125,000. He was a nardent Socialist, and set the example of division of profits with the employees by giving them equal shares in his fortune. Altogether twelve men were employed and the rich lease was divided into twelve parts whenever there was any money coming from the mining company in royalties.
Petrovich was happy and contented so long as money lasted, but he never succeeded in duplication his first strike and his fortune, estimated at $50,000, was absorbed in numerous other ventures.
Only four years ago, when the big strike was made, Nick was in his prime, robust, handsome and affluent. Two years ago he found he had tuberculosis, called the miners "rock on the chest" He tried climate changes and engaged doctors but continued to decline. Two weeks ago he left once more to gain relief, and died among friends at Colfax."
