Edward was appointed a Pitcairn elder in 1933 by Joshua Hill. When Hill first came to Pitcairn, Edward attracted his particular notice. Indeed, Edward stood by Hill to the last, although this bias did not pass to his children.

His temper was well-known. In one dispute with John Evans, who was a very small man, he brought the matter to termination by lifting Evans over his head and throwing him into a pig-sty, causing him serious injury.

Edward was an honest man, but severe and straight-laced. In general, he opposed the entry of the three Englishmen (Buffett, Evans, and Nobbs) to Pitcairn, and especially resented their leadership role, feeling that the leadership should be among the native Pitcairners.

Edward was Chief Magistrate in 1838-39.
