In Sept. 1858, James was Naturalized in Dist Court in Clinton Co., Iowa. On Sept 15, 1862, James enlisted into the Civil War in Burlington, Des Moines Co., Iowa USA. He fought for the Union in Co. B, 11th Regiment, US Infantry. He mustered out 15 Sept 1865 in Richmond, Virginia. In Sept. 1882, James filed for his war pension.

James married 1st, Bridget Blessington about 1866 in Henderson Co., Illinois. From that marriage, 2 kids were born; Mary Ellen and James Vincent. Bridget died in 1873. In 1874, James married Bridget's older sister Catherine Blessington, in Burlington, Des Moines Co., Iowa. From that marriage Thomas Lee was born.
