John J. Ekstrom, 42, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL., formerly of New Carlisle, drowned Sunday night at Nassau, Bahamas, in rough seas caused by Hurricane Kate. According to family members, John was alone on his yacht, tightening it down in Nassau Harbor, in preparation for the hurricane, when the occurred, the coroner's report indicated that John's death was caused by asphyxiation from drowning.
John was born May 6, 1942, in South Bend, Indiana. He is survived by his parents, Margaret (Murphy) and Carl L. Ekstrom, both of New Carlisle; and two sisters, Marsha Kirsch of Dallas, TX, and Ann Nita McDonald of Gary, IN.
John was a member of the graduating class of 1961, New Carlisle High School, and a graduate of Indiana University.
