Ira B. Goodspeed, of Harrison Township, was born in Athens County, Ohio, April 13, 1827. His father, Nathan Goodspeed, was born June 9, 1795, in Massachusetts. His mother, Thankful (Holwey) Goodspeed, was also a native of Massachusetts. The parents removed to Ohio in an early day. Our subject was reared on a farm, and remained with his parents until his marriage, which occurred March 25, 1860, with Miss Harriet N. Armitage, daughter of George and Maria (Ward) Armitage, the father a native of Pennsylvania, and the mother of Washington County, Ohio. Mrs Goodspeed was born in Athens County, Ohio. After his marriage Mr. Goodspeed followed farming in his native country until the fall of 1865, when he removed to this county, where his father's family had settled one year previous. January 7, 1866, the father died, and the mother, August 19, 1874. After the death of the father Mr. Goodspeed purchased the homestead of the heirs, and now has 120 acres on section 18, Harrison Township. Mr. and Mrs. Goodspeed have had four children, three of whom are living - George W., Francis M. married Hannah Bell Markley, and Daniel H. Thankful O. died February 14, 1873, aged twenty-three years. In politics Mr. Goodspeed is a Republican.

One Of County's Oldest And Most Highly Esteemed Citizens Victim Of Yarlysis [sic Paralysis]
Ira B. Goodspeed, one of the county's well known pioneer farmers died at eleven o'clock Sunday night after a short illness following a stroke of paralysis sustained Thursday evening. Mr. Goodspeed had suffered poor health for several months owing to the infirmity of his advanced age. He had been a sufferer from pleurisy and that disease had complicated the paralysis.

Mr. Goodspeed was born in Athens County, Ohio, on April 13, 1827, the son of Nathan and Thankful (Holwey) Goodspeed, both of whom were natives of Massachusetts. On March 25, 1860, Mr. Goodspeed was married to Miss Harriet N. Armitage, who survives him. At the time of his marriage he was still a resident of Ohio but a few years later, in the fall of 1865, he came to Wells County where his father's family had settled one year previous. Mr. Goodspeed's father died in January, 1866, and immediately thereafter he purchased the homestead from the other heirs where he has resided ever since.

Mr. and Mrs. Goodspeed were the parents of four children, of whom three sons survive: George W., Francis M., and Daniel H. One daughter, Thankful O., died in 1873 at the age of twenty-three. In addition to the widow and children, Mr. Goodspeed has two brothers: Joseph, of St. Louis, Mo., and Mathias, of Tracey, Iowa.

Mr. Goodspeed for many years has been a respected and honored member of this community and in passing he leaves behind him many friends to mourn and
many good works to bear testimony to his high character and noble virtues.

The funeral will be held today. The cortege will leave the home at one o'clock and the funeral services and burial will be at Six Mile.
