James Bowles, the son of Austin and Jane (Kell) Bowles, was born in Madison County, IL. on Apr. 22, 1844.

James Bowles, whose residence was Lamb's Point, Madison County, IL., enlisted in the Civil War on Aug 11, 1862 at Moro, IL. for 3 years. He was assigned to Company D of the 117th Illinois Infantry as a Private. He mustered in on Sep 19, 1862 at Camp Butler, IL. and mustered out on Aug 5, 1865 at Springfield, IL.

James B. Bowles married Dorcus Phillips in Madison County, IL. on Mar 22, 1866. They were the parents of John E., Ona Alice, and Lewis Bowles.

James Bowles is buried in the New Hope Cemetery portion of Worden Cemetery.
