G. E. Swaim Rites To Be Wednesday
Funeral services for George E. Swaim, 62, a native of Jackson township, Wells county, who death occurred at 5 o'clock Monday morning at his home at 5672 Winthrop street, Indianapolis, will be conducted at the chapel of the Baxter and Markin funeral home in Hartford City at 2 o'clock at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, and burial will take place in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Montpelier.

Dr. Jesse Fox, of Muncie, a former pastor of the Grace Methodist church of Hartford City, will conduct the services.

Mr. Swaim had been in a state of ill health for more than three years and in February, 1949, he underwent surgery at Mayo hospital, Rochester, Minn. He had been bedfast at intervals since and had been totally bedfast for ten days prior to his death.

Prior to locating in Indianapolis, Mr. Swaim had been active in Hartford City educational and business circles. He taught in the high school there 12 years and was associated with the Citizens State bank of that city for 16 years, advancing to assistant cashier. He left there in 1932 to accept a position as senior bank examiner for the state department of financial institutions and continued in that position until 1945 when he became vice president of the Union Trust company, of Indianapolis, a position he held at his death.

While a bank examiner, he assisted Dr. H. B. Wells, now I. U. president, recodify the Indiana banking laws.

Born in Jackson township, Wells county, on Sept. 22, 1887, Mr. Swaim was the son of the late Henry L. and Indiana Tomlinson Swaim. He received his education in the county schools, Marion Normal college, Ball State Teachers college and University of Wisconsin. He taught in Jackson township seven years before going to the Hartford City schools. He took an active interest in civic affairs both at Hartford City and Indianapolis.

He was a member of the Methodist church and of the Masonic and Elks lodges.

Survivors include the wife Mabel Gilbert Swaim; a son, Gilbert, associated with the RCA in Bloomington; to grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Nora Murray, of Tulsa, Okla., and three brothers, John E. Swaim, of Tallhina, Okla., Alvin C. Swaim, of Crossville, Ill., and Orville C. Swaim, of Montpelier.
