Obituary transcript for Pearl from the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, August 11, 1959:
Mrs. H. M. Grugan, Lock Haven, Dies
Mrs. Pearl Shoemaker Grugan, of 302 West Church Street, Lock Haven, wife of Hartford M. Grugan, died at 4:45 a.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1959, in the Williamsport Hospital. She was vice president of the Dickey-Grugan Hardware Co., Inc., which operates stores in Lock Haven and this city.
She had been a medical patient in the hospital since April 30. Her death, however, was unexpected since she appeared to be comfortable and in satisfactory condition while her family visited with her last evening.
Death was due to leukemia and a heart condition.
Mrs. Grugan was a native of Clinton County where she was born on Sept. 14, 1885. Her parents were Samuel and Mary King Shoemaker, widely known Clinton County farmers. The ancestral farm is still in possession of her family.
She was graduated from the schools of Lock Haven and the former Lock Haven Normal School, now the Lock Haven State Teachers College. She taught school for several terms prior to her marriage.
She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Lock Haven and had been particularly active in the Helen Daley Bible class of that congregation.
She was also a member of the Rotary Anns of Lock Haven, a women's auxiliary of Rotary International.
Mrs. Grugan was identified with the family business for many years. Her husband founded it in 1919 as the H. M. Grugan Hardware Co, of Lock Haven. Later he expanded by establishing a branch in this city, known at first as the Willliamsport Hardware Co.
Shortly after R. L. Dickey entered the corporation both stores become known as Dickey-Grugan Hardware Co., Inc. They have continued under that corporate name since the death of Mr. Dickey. Mr. Grugan is the president and secretary-treasurer of the firm.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Grugan leaves two daughters and four sons: Virginia, of Melbourne, Fla.; Mrs. George Adams, of this city, manager of the company's Williamsport store; Dr. Hartford E. Grugan, of this city, now enrolled in graduate surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia; Dr. Robert A. Grugan, chief radiologist at the Springfield General Hospital in Springfield, Mass.; L. Albert Grugan, of Lock Haven, manager of the Lock Haven store; and Andrew King Grugan, of this city, comptroller of the company.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at Welsh's, on West Main Street, Lock Haven. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Lock Haven.
