Dau of Uriah Bolton and Lucinda Smith. She was born to Cherokee parents on Cherokee land in Tennessee and lived there. Her parents, Uriah and Lucinda Smith Bolton, were well known Cherokee Indians.

Her mother, Lucinda, never formally registered her children as members of the Cherokee Nation when they were forcibly moved (The Trail of Tears) to Oklahoma.

Despite overwhelming evidence of her Cherokee lineage, she fought a long and unsuccessful legal battle to become a bona fide member of that Nation.
