Earl Roe Donnell, Jr. was born on September 3, 1918, in Temple, Texas. He was the son of E. R. and Callie Donnell. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas he graduated from Cal Tech University with a Mas­ ters Degree in aeronautical engineering. It was during those years he served in the Naval Reserve and proceeded to flight training in Pensacola, Florida where he was awarded his pilot wings. He was assigned to Scouting Squadron #6 onboard the USS Enterprise. During an attack, flying a TBD-1, Bureau# 0274, on the Mar­ shall Islands, February 1, 1942, he was killed by heavy anti-aircraft fire as he attacked his assigned target. He was awarded the Air Medal for his service. In 1943 the US Navy commissioned a ship in his honor- the "USS Earl Roe Donnell, Jr., (DE- 56)." His name is listed on the "Tablets of the Missing," National Memori­al Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii.
