Reuben was the oldest of 12 children born to William and Kazia Lattig/Laddig Miller.

They had at least 4 children.
In civilian life he was a brickmaker, following in the family tradition.

He married Mary Elizabeth Walters (1824-1906)August 12 1849 Williams Township, Easton, Pennsylvania.
