Ray Lee Costner, 84, of Kirtland, went to be with his heavenly Father on Friday, Jan. 20, 2012. Ray was born in Pima, Ariz., to H.L. and Susanna Costner.
Ray served in the Navy during World War II. Later, he met and married Freeda Rose Moody. In 1952, they were married for time and all eternity in the Mesa, Arizona, Temple. They were later blessed with seven children.
He worked for the Forest Service, and was a brick layer who helped build the LDS Apache church building. He also worked for Jim Palmer at his dairy.
For most of his life, he was a mechanic. He worked at Montgomery Ward and then at Gene's Frame & Alignment. In 1990, he retired from Gene's.
Ray was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed serving in various callings throughout his life. He also enjoyed serving others.
Ray was a good son, brother, father and grandfather. He always enjoyed teasing others, especially his seven sisters.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Bob Costner; and sisters, Marjorie Bryce, Betty Morris, Connie Hamm and Mary Fay Merrell.
He is survived by his seven children and their spouses, Melanie (Carlton) Snyder of Bloomfield, Fauna (Rex) Smith of Provo, Utah, Karen (Michael) Decker of Fruitland, Kent (Christine) Costner of West Valley City, Utah, Kelly (Linda) Costner, Cliff (Laura) Costner and Diana (David) Signs, all of Kirtland. He is also survived by three sisters, Katherine Harmon, Rochelle Poulsen and Martha Francese, all of Arizona, 39 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank all who helped take exceptional care of Ray, especially Dr. Burns, Jessica Decker (nurse and granddaughter) and all the staff at Beehive Homes.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at the LDS Church in Kirtland, 473 Road 6100, with Bishop Huffman officiating.
Burial will take place at Kirtland/Fruitland Cemetery, following the services.
