US ARMY - WORLD WAR I & II

Garnet Mosgrove Sixsmith, born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada was a professional hockey player. After playing in Canada, he played professionally in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1902-1910, along with his brother Arthur Sixsmith. He played professionally for the Pittsburgh Victorias, Pittsburgh Professionals, Canadian Soo Algonquins, Pittsburgh Lyceum and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. Sixsmith was instrumental in changing the type of skates used by ice hockey players. He had a Winnepeg manufacturer adapt a pair of tubular aluminum skates (the type used by speed skaters) for use by hockey players. The type of skates he developed, which replaced Lunn skates, are still used by professional hockey players today. Sixsmith was also a retired US Army colonial serving during WW1. He was involved in directing US troop stateside movement. He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad beginning in 1905 as a clerk. He was the youngest person ever appointed superintendent for the PARR (Conemaugh Division). After retirement he moved to Point Chautauqua, New York. He was married to Martha Martin (1887-1972). They had two sons and two daughters.
