Abbie Neal aka Esther Amanda McKinnon was a National Champion Woman's Fiddler. She started her career with her brothers, Gilbert and Walter. For two years, she played violin at the DuBois Symphony [Pennsylvania] Orchestra. She worked with Cowboy Phil's band in the '40's and later formed Abbie Neal and Her Ranch Girls. In the '50's, they were TV stars in Pittsburgh-Johnstown-West Virginia on WDTV, WENS, WJAC-TV, and WTRF-TV. They won the Arthur Godfrey Talent Scouts show in New York City and entertained troops on USO tours. Abbie performed on the Nevada Circuit at Las Vegas' Golden Nugget and Reno's Harrah's Club. After retirement, she entertained senior citizens at convalescent facilities, hospitals, and senior centers. Abbie sang and was a multi-talented instrumentalist, well-known for her beautiful recitations. A star was placed in her honor on the Walkway of Stars at the World's Original Jamboree in Wheeling, West Virginia, in 1983 for her major contributions to Jamboree USA and country music. Abbie was preceded in death by her father, Carlton Neal, and her mother, Amanda Jane Mullins Neal; brothers, Lee, Charles, Walter, Gilbert, and Richard; sisters, Agnes and Harriet; first husband, Gene Johnson, and second husband, Merrill Hollis "Mac" McKinnon, who is in the Nevada Football Hall of Fame. Abbie had no children, but is survived by many friends who loved her as though she were family. Abbie is survived by a stepson, Barry McKinnon of Washington; 1C1R Jerry and wife Phyllis Neal of Ohio; niece Gwen of Nevada, and nephew Gilbert and wife Erin of North Carolina.
